Fatigue criteria for VIV on free spanning pipelines arose as a necessity due to high costs for seabed intervention. This development was mostly developed in the 1980-1990s. Avoidance criteria were simply too expensive. A similar development forms the basis for VIV on flexible risers. The focus area has now shifted to jumpers, spools, piping systems, flex loops and other 3D geometries. Increasing needs for flexibility in such structures means it is increasingly difficult to fulfill standard and conservative avoidance criteria. To cater for new needs and cost efficiency, fatigue criteria for such geometries has seen an increasing demand.

In our seminar “VIV on 3D geometries”, we present the first step in incorporating fatigue and combined loading design criteria for jumpers, spools, piping systems and flex loops and other 3D geometries. We will provide an opportunity to discuss how the industry is changing and how we should aim to accommodate and govern this change to ensure safe, reliable and cost efficient VIV design for 3D geometries in the future.
