This is machine learning

Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that combines informatics, mathematics and calculation-oriented statistics. Machine learning is techniques that help us handle large amounts of data intelligently. Using designs and algorithms, computers become able to learn from, and develop behaviour based on, empirical data. Among other things, machine learning can be used in:

  • Decision support systems
  • Data mining
  • Voice recognition
  • Automatic vehicle guidance

Although machine learning is not really a new technology, it's one of the major technology trends right now. By bringing the old technology to its full potential, we open up new and exciting opportunities for data analysis and problem solving. Active use of machine learning can help streamline risk management by anticipating events and outcomes.

In the health sector, for example, we can arrange data for digital analyses and apply statistics and machine learning. Thus, precision medicine can provide a far more targeted and effective treatment of individuals. This was just one of the main conclusions of the Global Opportunity Report from 2017. The report also shows how global business is committed to finding activities that promote the UN's sustainability goals. The main findings in the report were:

  • Smart water technology is perceived as the biggest market opportunity
  • Providing e-learning to conflict-restricted areas is the second largest opportunity, also enabling business to contribute and disseminate knowledge and create more peaceful communities
  • Increasing confidence that digital technology such as machine learning and blockchain technology can help combat global risk such as cyber crimes and increasing inequality
  • Consensus that increasing inequality is the greatest risk

Machine learning at DNV GL

It is demanding to handle large amounts of data, which senior researcher René Castberg in DNV GL has experienced. Based on the desire to exploit existing data in new and future-oriented ways, Castberg has been a key player in the development of DNV GL's new digital industrial platform Veracity. This platform will exploit big data to its full potential, which can help the maritime sector, the energy industry, and other sectors to increase profitability without compromising safety and the environment.

DNV GL is a world leader in the global energy sector, and for us to stay on top, it is important that we use machine learning and all the possibilities it brings. We have huge amounts of data, and only machine learning can make full use of them.

In the summer of 2018, we have eight master students working on a project with us. They will among other things work with big data, machine learning and artificial intelligence. You can read more about the project here.
